Staff Hardware Engineer - Motion Sensing

As a Staff Hardware Engineer - Motion Sensing, you will drive the architecture, specification, development, and characterization of motion and inertial sensing systems for next-generation Oura products. This role reports to the Director, Hardware Sensing and is based in our San Diego or San Francisco offices.

Responsibilities

Sensor Architecture & Design
  • Define and evolve motion and inertial sensor architectures (accelerometers, gyroscopes, IMUs) for low-power wearable platforms.
  • Translate sensing requirements into robust hardware specifications aligned with product goals.
Development & Integration
  • Lead integration of motion sensors into Oura hardware, ensuring calibration, noise management, power efficiency, and high-quality signal acquisition.
  • Design and execute sensor characterization and validation tests from prototype through production.
Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Collaborate with firmware, algorithm, and systems teams to ensure accurate motion data feeds into signal processing and ML stacks.
  • Contribute to product planning and the sensor roadmap based on performance feedback and technology advances.
Testing & Validation
  • Develop and maintain test methodologies, metrics, and automation frameworks for motion sensor performance.
  • Analyze sensor data to diagnose edge cases and performance bottlenecks and define corrective actions.
Supplier & Partner Coordination
  • Engage with sensor vendors and manufacturers to assess technology options, secure components, and optimize integration for mass production.
Documentation & Communication
  • Produce technical documentation of designs, trade studies, test plans, and performance metrics and present findings to stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in motion sensing, inertial measurement systems, or similar sensor design and integration roles.
  • Experience with accelerometers, gyroscopes, MEMS sensors, and low-power embedded sensor interfaces.
  • Strong background in sensor characterization, signal quality analysis, embedded systems, and data integrity.
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving and written/verbal communication skills and a collaborative mindset.

  • Region 1: $217,000 - $225,000
  • Region 2: $197,000 - $232,000
