Oura — Hardware Engineer, Health Sensing

Oura’s mission is to empower every person to own their inner potential by helping people understand readiness, activity, and sleep quality through the Oura Ring and app. We are hiring a Health Sensing Hardware Engineer to join the hardware team working on future wearables and accessory devices. This role is hybrid out of our San Diego or San Francisco office.

What you will do:

  • Develop and validate physiological sensing systems for acquiring and analyzing physiological signals in wearable health and wellness products.
  • Define hardware and software technical specifications and implement test and calibration protocols both internally and at manufacturing sites.
  • Ensure physiological sensors meet specifications from prototype to mass production.
  • Build and validate hardware architectures optimized for low-noise, high-resolution time-series signal collection.
  • Plan and execute benchtop and on-body testing to evaluate system performance across diverse user populations.
  • Support validation and compliance efforts with regulatory, research, and clinical teams.
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure end-to-end system performance and signal integrity.
  • Conduct rigorous testing and troubleshooting across varying environmental and use-case conditions.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers to integrate sensors in constrained form factors.
  • Partner with firmware and software teams to enable and refine features built on physiological data.
  • Work directly with sensor vendors to evaluate components and address integration challenges.
  • Travel occasionally to Finland and global manufacturing or development sites as required (15%–20%).

Requirements

We are looking for candidates with strong technical skills, problem solving, and cross-functional communication.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, biomedical engineering, physics, or related field with 7+ years industry experience (or Master’s with 5+ years, or PhD with 2+ years).
  • Strong electrical engineering background with experience designing and testing low-noise analog or mixed-signal systems.
  • Experience with time-series physiological signal acquisition and minimizing noise and motion artifacts.
  • Familiarity with algorithmic methods for time-series modeling and physiological metric calculation.
  • Simulation and modeling experience (ANSYS, CST, COMSOL) and embedded software/data acquisition skills (C/C++, Python, etc.).
  • Experience with data analysis and signal processing tools (Python, MATLAB, JMP).
  • Strong experimental and analytical skills; ability to isolate and debug cross-domain issues and iterate on early-stage concepts.
  • Effective communicator across disciplines and experience in cross-functional teams spanning hardware, firmware, product, and research.
  • Hands-on prototyping and testing experience; proficiency with lab instruments such as DMMs, oscilloscopes, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, physiological simulators, power analyzers, and environmental chambers.

Bonus

  • Experience integrating physiological sensing systems into wearable or health-oriented products.
  • Track record supporting high-volume products from prototyping through manufacturing and launch.
  • Knowledge of regulatory or safety standards for health technologies.
  • Experience in validation studies or performance benchmarking across diverse populations.

Benefits

Oura offers competitive salary and equity, health/dental/vision insurance, mental health resources, an Oura Ring for employees, fertility benefits, flexible working arrangements, $750 learning & development credit, paid time off and parental leave, and employee discounts. Pay is market-based and varies by location.
