Research Associate in Chemical Proteomics

The Rosalind Franklin Institute (the Franklin) is a technology institute established by the UK Government as a centre committed to advancing tools needed to transform healthcare. The Institute brings together researchers in life and physical sciences and engineering to develop tools to image, interpret and intervene in biological systems, speeding discovery of medicines, diagnostics and understanding of health and disease.

Role summary

As a Research Associate in Chemical Proteomics at the Franklin you will deliver a defined research project and contribute independent scientific skills to team projects. You will develop and apply new mass spectrometry (MS) methodologies to investigate complex proteomes with high sensitivity and precision, and apply these methods to biological samples such as cells, organoids and tissue. Although primarily research-focussed, the role involves close work with the Franklin proteomics core facility to help maintain equipment, reagents and sample sources and to demonstrate newly developed technologies.

Key Responsibilities

As a Research Associate you will:
  • Carry out analytical procedures for proteome characterisation to a high degree of precision, including sample preparation.
  • Analyse and interpret quantitative proteomic data with statistical rigour using common freely available software packages.
  • Help devise and create proteomic methodologies (sample preparation, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry) to address biological questions.
  • Act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on scientific protocols and experimental techniques.
  • Assist with general laboratory maintenance including troubleshooting and upkeep of nanoLCs, centrifugal evaporators, liquid handlers and MS equipment.
  • Help devise methods for supporting diverse sample sources including cell lines, cell samples, tissue samples and organoids.
  • Liaise with laboratory support staff, engineers and schedule servicing to ensure continuous operation.
  • Enhance research through collaboration and contribute actively to idea exchange across networks.
  • Work within a larger project team contributing to Institute-wide projects aligned to Franklin challenges.
  • Publish research articles in leading journals and present findings at national and international meetings.
  • Support and develop others including day-to-day supervision of students or visitors.
  • Participate in and support public engagement and widening access activities of the Franklin.
  • Undertake any other duties reasonably requested in the normal running of the facility.
