Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a large scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Our scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.
Diamond is undertaking a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II, which includes a new machine, new beamlines and upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery and computing to deliver a more brilliant, higher-energy light source.
About the Role
The Coherent Soft X-ray Imaging and Diffraction (CSXID) beamline is one of the new flagship beamlines under construction as part of the Diamond-II upgrade project. CSXID will provide high-resolution imaging techniques capable of measurements in 2D and 3D, supporting research across quantum materials, battery materials and catalysts.
We are recruiting a Beamline Technician or Senior Beamline Technician to join the growing team supporting the CSXID beamline. You will be part of the Magnetic Materials Group of technicians who support multiple beamlines and a support laboratory.
The role will include:
- Assembling, testing, installing and assisting with commissioning of mechanical beamline components and systems.
- Assisting with prototyping activities.
- Performing routine maintenance and undertaking testing and fault-finding following component failures.
- Developing designs and facilitating procurement or assembly of small mechanical components to support beamline operations.
- Assisting users and scientists with preparation and set-up of experiments.
- Maintaining a clean and safe working environment and performing routine inspections following safe systems of work.
For the Senior Beamline Technician the role also includes supervising and coordinating work on different beamlines within the group and working closely with technical, engineering and scientific staff to produce designs for new systems, equipment or processes.
About You
You will hold an ONC or GNVQ level 2 (or equivalent) qualification or demonstrate equivalent work experience.
You will demonstrate knowledge and experience of understanding and interpreting mechanical engineering drawings, carrying out intricate mechanical and electrical assembly tasks, using standard measurement instruments (including multimeters and vernier calipers), and good problem solving, planning and organising skills.
To be considered for the Senior role you will also demonstrate experience in ultra-high vacuum equipment, chilled water and compressed air systems, and at least one of the following areas: cryogenics, magnetic fields or specialist gases.

This position meets a SOC code on the UK Government’s Temporary Shortage List and there are restrictions on sponsoring non-UK & Irish nationals. At Technician level Diamond can potentially sponsor individuals who were previously sponsored in the UK before 4th April 2024 or those who meet the new entrant rate eligibility (on a fixed-term basis). At Senior Technician level Diamond could sponsor eligible individuals but such employment may be fixed-term and relocating individuals may not be able to bring dependants.
