Director of Engineering

At Tucuvi we build clinical-grade AI to ensure every patient receives timely, high-quality care. Our AI Care Management platform combines autonomous AI agents (including LOLA, a Voice Clinical Agent) with workflow logic, escalation, documentation, and seamless integration into health‑system infrastructure. Tucuvi is the first Class IIb SaMD-approved AI platform for Voice AI driven patient management.
We support 50+ care pathways across 60+ healthcare organizations, delivering high automation of nursing workflows and strong patient engagement. The company recently closed a $20M Series A to scale across Europe and the US.

CONTEXT

We are a mission-driven SaaS company positioning ourselves at the top of Clinical Conversational AI while growing rapidly. As we scale, the Director of Engineering will own and elevate the engineering organization through technical leadership, people management, and cross-functional representation.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

This senior leadership role combines four core areas of ownership: people management, engineering excellence, hands-on technical contribution, and representing engineering across the company.
  • People Manager: lead and grow the engineering team, maintain 1:1 cadence, run performance reviews, develop career paths, and foster psychological safety.
  • Engineering excellence & hygiene: set architecture, tooling, CI/CD, code quality, and regulatory compliance; drive AI-powered dev tool adoption (Claude Code); embed QA in engineering and align QA with medical device requirements.
  • Hands-on technical contributor: write and review code (TypeScript/JavaScript, Python), pair with engineers on complex problems, and support solutions engineering in client/integration discussions.
  • Voice of engineering: represent engineering in Shape-up betting meetings, management forums, and externally with customers and investors; align engineering priorities with company strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Team leadership: 1:1s, performance reviews, career development, underperformance management, feedback culture.
  • Technical architecture: centralise decisions on architecture, scalability, frameworks, and tooling.
  • AI-native engineering: drive adoption of AI-powered dev tools (Claude Code specifically) and new AI-assisted practices.
  • Engineering standards: CI/CD, code quality, and regulatory compliance for a medical device environment.
  • QA ownership: embed QA into the engineering culture and introduce AI-assisted QA methodologies.
  • Hands-on contribution and client-facing technical support when needed.

REQUIREMENTS

Must-haves:
  • Technical expertise: hands-on coding background; mastery of AI-assisted dev tools (Claude Code or equivalent); deep experience with enterprise-grade B2B SaaS, real-time systems, microservices, cloud infrastructure, and high-availability architectures; strong CI/CD and regulated-compliance experience; familiarity with Voice AI, Python, TypeScript, LiveKit, GCP, and Kubernetes.
  • Leadership & people management: proven ability to build and scale engineering teams, performance management, career frameworks, and cross-functional alignment.
  • AI-native mindset: operational mastery of AI coding tools and experience driving organisational adoption of new tooling and practices.
  • Communication: fluent in Spanish and English with strong stakeholder management skills.
  • Location: based in Spain or within a compatible timezone.
Bonus points: prior SaMD or regulated-industry experience, multi-tenant high-scale SaaS experience at low latency, budgeting/vendor management exposure at Director/VP level, and Azure familiarity.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Fixed and variable salary with flexible benefits through Cobee (meal vouchers, transport, nursery, etc.).
  • Remote, async work and flexible hours.
  • Teambuildings (at least two per year).
  • 23 days of vacation + your birthday + 6 local/regional holidays.
  • Budget for training and personal development; Mac laptop and required equipment.
  • Opportunity to join a mission-driven team and impact patient care.
