About Us
Sage is on a mission to improve care and quality of life for older adults, starting with those residing in senior living facilities. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death among adults over 65. Sage has built modern solutions for detecting when older adults need help, enabling residents to alert caregivers and providing software for caregivers to triage responses.
Sage is a small, tight team of ambitious, multi-disciplinary entrepreneurs. We are a software-enabled, mission-driven company focused on problems central to our mission. We work hard and fast while treating our work as a marathon.
About this Role
As a Senior/Staff Backend IoT Engineer, you will be a technical leader responsible for bridging physical systems at senior living communities with the cloud infrastructure that powers the Sage platform. You will define the architectural direction for our edge computing systems, drive technical decisions, mentor engineers, establish best practices, and be a key technical voice in company-wide strategy.
You will own projects such as fall detection, location tracking, and integrations with third-party hardware. Your contributions to edge and backend stacks will directly impact Sage's ability to scale and improve care in senior living.
Responsibilities
- Define and evolve the technical architecture for Sage's edge computing platform, balancing immediate delivery needs with long-term scalability.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives spanning Hardware, Cloud Infrastructure, and Client Success to deliver end-to-end solutions.
- Mentor and grow engineers through code reviews, design reviews, and knowledge sharing.
- Develop greenfield solutions for challenging problems in the senior living industry.
- Develop software to run on thousands of on-premise deployed systems and design cloud systems for orchestration.
- Create and maintain software to produce high-fidelity diagnostics of edge hardware.
- Design methods to train machine learning models that determine resident location in senior living communities.
- Develop full-stack services and review pull requests to raise the bar for code quality and system design.
- Remotely troubleshoot and diagnose issues with edge-deployed hardware and software, working with support and client success teams to address root causes.
Minimum Qualifications
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, with significant depth in backend and/or embedded systems.
- Track record of leading complex technical projects from conception through delivery, influencing outcomes across team boundaries.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and elevate team capabilities.
- Proven experience and proficiency in Java and object-oriented principles.
- Working knowledge of Linux, networking, and RF communication.
- Strong communication skills, with experience presenting technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- A history of practical, creative problem-solving (described as "MacGyver-esque" in the original posting).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing high-availability production Java systems.
- Experience customizing Linux distributions for commercial deployment.
- Experience designing systems that span edge and cloud environments, addressing intermittent connectivity, over-the-air updates, and fleet management.
- Experience with AWS backend technologies and distributed systems.
- Background in IoT, healthcare technology, or regulated industries.
- Experience with technologies used in edge/cloud systems and informed opinions about trade-offs.
