About Us
Sage is on a mission to improve care and quality of life for older adults, starting with those residing in senior living facilities. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death among adults over 65. At Sage we've built modern ways for residents to alert caregivers and for caregivers to triage responses. The company is a small, tight team of multi-disciplinary entrepreneurs focused on mission-driven software.

This Site Reliability Engineer role is critical to ensuring Sage operates as a 24x7, highly available platform for elder care. You will partner with engineering teams across the organization to achieve four 9s of uptime and improve overall system reliability and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Design and evolve highly reliable system architectures to ensure high availability, fault tolerance, and scalability across production infrastructure.
- Lead complex incident response efforts, coordinating across engineering teams to diagnose and resolve production issues and drive post-incident reviews.
- Define and implement organization-wide observability practices including metrics, logging, tracing, and actionable alerting.
- Establish and maintain reliability standards (SLIs, SLOs, error budgets) and integrate these practices into the development lifecycle.
- Drive automation and infrastructure improvements to reduce operational toil and improve deployment and monitoring workflows.
- Partner with engineering teams on system design and architecture reviews to ensure reliability, scalability, and operational best practices.
- Evolve cloud infrastructure including networking, compute, storage, and security to support scalable and resilient systems.
- Operate and improve critical data infrastructure with focus on availability, performance, backups, and disaster recovery for production databases.
- Lead capacity planning and auto-scaling efforts to ensure systems scale effectively with product usage.
- Build internal tooling and platforms to improve developer experience, simplify debugging, and enable safer deployments.
Qualifications
- 7-12+ years of experience in software, infrastructure, or site reliability engineering operating large-scale distributed systems in production.
- Experience operating and supporting edge or device-based systems (connectivity, observability, remote updates, reliability for distributed hardware/IoT deployments).
- Strong networking fundamentals and experience debugging issues across load balancers, DNS, TLS, and VPC networking (e.g., AWS VPC).
- Experience operating and scaling production databases (performance tuning, replication, backup/recovery, high availability) such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or distributed databases.
- Deep expertise in cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP).
- Experience designing and operating highly available systems (redundancy, failover, disaster recovery, capacity planning).
- Expertise in containerization and orchestration, particularly Kubernetes.
- Advanced observability and monitoring skills using tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, or Grafana.
- Strong programming skills in languages commonly used for infrastructure engineering (e.g., Go, Python, Java) and experience building internal tooling and automation.
- Deep knowledge of infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Pulumi) and proven experience leading reliability initiatives (SLOs/SLIs, incident response, post-incident reviews).
- Ability to influence engineering teams and guide best practices for reliability and operational excellence.
- Strong incident management and production debugging skills, coordinating responses to complex outages and improving system resilience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience introducing and scaling SRE practices in early-stage or high-growth organizations, moving teams from reactive operations to proactive reliability engineering.
