About the Role:
We are seeking a Principal Firmware Engineer for a key role in Avive’s R&D organization. This player-coach position will develop and lead embedded firmware systems from early design through production releases, maintenance, optimizations, and feature expansions. The role will architect, code, modify, debug, and optimize embedded firmware for life-saving medical products.
What You'll Do:
Key responsibilities include:
- Serve as a technical leader for medical device firmware development and lead a team of engineers
- Design, code, unit test, and debug applications in C and C++ for bare-metal and/or RTOS environments
- Integrate firmware with embedded systems and work with microcontrollers (e.g., ARM, PIC32), DSPs, and peripherals over SPI, I2C, UART, I2S, single-wire interfaces, I/O, and USB
- Work with wireless technologies including BLE, Wi‑Fi, GNSS, and cellular communication
- Read electrical schematics, use EE lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, power supplies), and perform system-level hardware/firmware debugging
- Conduct code reviews, apply code-quality metrics, follow secure coding standards, and participate in software verification activities
- Apply UML, systems thinking, and modern software development practices
- Produce design documentation, flowcharts, diagrams, code comments, and clear testable code
- Recommend and provision COTS software through approved supplier management
- Help develop software verification and quality-assurance procedures
- Use Git and Jira extensively
- Perform PCB board bring-up and use EE laboratory equipment
- Work in an FDA-regulated environment applying IEC 62304
Required Education & Experience:
- BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or equivalent combination of coursework and experience
- 10+ years of experience, including a minimum of 5 years with medical devices
Bonus Points For:
- Proven firmware engineering experience in C and/or C++
- Experience with bare-metal, RTOS, and Linux systems
- Experience with Python or other scripting languages
- Experience with technologies such as ARM, PIC32, or DSP
- Familiarity with cybersecurity concepts and secure coding practices
- Experience with test-driven development and Agile/Scrum
- Experience working as an electrical engineer

Anticipated salary range: $200,000 - $230,000
