Job description

About Hedera Dx

Founded in Switzerland in 2021, Hedera Dx is bringing access to advanced cancer care to the next billion people worldwide. This requires building highly sophisticated technology solutions based on molecular biology and artificial intelligence to serve patients and healthcare professionals.
We bring tumor profiling, the use of liquid biopsies, and real-world data insights to health systems globally. Our work leads to improved patient experiences and outcomes now, while advancing the development of breakthrough precision oncology therapies.

Our team

We are currently a team of 20 people from diverse backgrounds working across Europe, and we’re looking for a longstanding team member to join us.
Our company culture is built on mutual support and collaboration. At Hedera Dx, we are passionate about achieving our goals, but we also believe that working together and having fun is essential to creating a stimulating and productive environment. We approach delicate topics, such as health and medicine, with sensitivity, while fostering an atmosphere of openness and mutual respect that allows every individual to bring their best selves to work.
We are also deeply committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. At Hedera Dx, we believe that diversity drives innovation and that every person’s unique background and perspective enriches our team.

The Bioinformatics Research Engineer Role

We’re looking for bioinformatic research engineers who share our ambition and are excited to contribute to a growing bioinformatics team and push liquid biopsies forward. We value people who assume positive intent, collaborate openly, and enjoy working in a caring and authentic environment. You’ll have the opportunity to influence our engineering practices, shape decisions, and grow together with a team that’s passionate about making a difference in cancer care.
Your core responsibility will be to develop the Hedera bioinformatics platform — powering applications for bioinformatic algorithm development, assay development and data management. Our stack includes Python, C++, Terraform, AWS, and GitHub. You don’t need to know them all — curiosity and eagerness to learn count for more than checklists.
We embrace a curious mindset and actively explore modern AI-assisted development tools to enhance productivity, reduce cognitive load, and let engineers focus on solving meaningful problems — not boilerplate. We encourage exploring such tools when it makes sense, and you’re welcome to introduce new ones that can help us work better.

Key Responsibilities

The Bioinformatics Research Engineer will take on critical tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Develop advanced bioinformatics algorithms focused on cell-free DNA diagnostics in oncology (fusion detection, MSI calling etc…)
  • Design and optimize data pipelines for processing large-scale genomic datasets to deliver tumour profiling results in production.
  • Design and optimize data management tools to ensure that we create F.A.I.R datasets for downstream use.
  • Automate and optimize assay development and implementations to standardize and speed up our processes.
Some examples contributions:
  • Analyze and review data coming from a customer to ensure that our algorithms are performing as expected in the field
  • Define data schemas and pipelines to ingest unstructured data from customers / internal to make it available for downstream analysis
  • Develop an algorithm to extract a novel biomarker from cell free DNA
  • Review literature to understand the clinical implication of a biomarker and understand competing approaches to its detection.
  • Optimize our docker building process to speed up build times

Qualifications

We’re looking for a candidate with:
Essential:
  • A Master’s degree / PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field or relevant experience. At least 3 years of experience in bioinformatics research or a similar technical field, with a focus on genomic data analysis.
  • Expertise in Python and C++, with a solid understanding of algorithms, data structures, and software engineering principles.
  • Experience with genomic bioinformatics tools / pipelines and algorithms.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP).
  • A passion for healthcare innovation, particularly in oncology and liquid biopsy technologies.
Nice to have:
  • Experience working with cell free DNA data
  • Experience with data engineering tools and practices
  • Experience with dev ops tools and practices
  • Contributions to Open-source Bioinformatics Projects
  • Familiarity with Oncology Cohorts and Databases

What’s in it for you

At Hedera Dx, we value our team members and aim to create an environment where you can excel in your career while enjoying a fulfilling personal journey. Here’s what we offer:
  • Competitive compensation: A competitive salary and equity package to reward your contributions.
  • Purpose-driven work: Be part of a mission that directly impacts the lives of cancer patients worldwide.
  • Flexible work environment: A mix of remote and on-site work, with opportunities to travel and engage directly with colleagues across Europe.
  • Growth opportunities: Work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where your ideas and contributions can make a real difference.
  • People-first culture: Join a supportive team that values collaboration, mutual respect, and having fun while achieving ambitious goals.
