About glaucare
glaucare develops ophmo, a mobile eye clinic designed to address the global problem that 2.5 billion people do not have access to ophthalmological care, leading to blindness from untreated eye diseases.
Problem
The World Health Organisation highlights that many people worldwide lack access to ophthalmological care. Diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, or infections can cause blindness if not timely diagnosed and treated, especially in regions with few or no eye doctors.
Solution
glaucare's ophmo mobile eye clinic enables eye doctors, clinics, and local health organizations to examine people preventively in rural areas. Trained medical assistants perform registration and measurements, generating data visualized through an app. Ophthalmologists remotely diagnose based on this data, informing patients accordingly.
Product
The ophmo case is a compact suitcase containing an iPad with an app, five measuring devices, a display board for visual acuity tests, and necessary accessories. It is designed for usability and quick learning, enabling medical assistants with intermediate education to operate it effectively after about a week of training.
Vision and Impact
glaucare has established contacts and distributors in West and East Africa and tested the ophmo case at Kisii Eye Hospital in Kenya. Interest is growing from other countries including those in South-East Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, aiming to combat ophthalmological underuse worldwide.
