The Role
At Ambience, our AI is only as strong as the data that powers it. As the Clinical AI Data Operations Manager, you'll lead the development and scaling of the human-in-the-loop engine behind our medical AI models. You'll be responsible for the systems, teams, and quality processes that ensure our clinical data is accurate, reliable, and ready for production. Think: the operational rigor of a world-class logistics company, combined with the standards of a top-tier research lab. This is a rare opportunity to own a function that transforms data quality into a durable operational advantage—and help redefine how AI supports healthcare.
Who You Are
You're an operations builder who thrives in fast-paced, high-throughput environments. You've led data annotation or labeling pipelines at high-performing AI organizations and know how to optimize for speed, cost, and quality at scale. You're passionate about process design, data measurement, and rolling up your sleeves when needed. You bring structure and empathy to managing distributed teams—and have a clear vision for what great contractor systems and QA pipelines should look like. Most importantly, you're excited to apply your expertise to a mission that matters.
- 3+ years leading high-throughput, human-data programs in data-centric teams
- 1+ years of people management experience (hiring, coaching, performance)
- Proven success in managing data operations within high-performing ML teams
- Strong knowledge of annotation tools, QA workflows, and workforce management
- Comfortable with ambiguity and extreme ownership in a startup environment
- Willingness to work from our SF office ~3 days/week.
Bonus if you have:
- Experience managing highly skilled clinical or PhD-level annotators.
- Familiarity with medical data operations or HIPAA/PHI compliance.
- Proficiency in SQL or Python for automation and data analysis
What You'll Do
- Hire and mentor a small, high-performing core team of Clinical Data Operations Specialists.
- Design and scale a pipeline to source, onboard, and a large, high-quality pool of clinical contractors
- Foster a strong contractor culture that's motivated, mission-aligned, and engaged.
- Implement robust QA systems including automation and expert validation with automated checks, peer review, and expert adjudication.
- Instrument quality and throughput across the system with rigorous metrics and feedback loops.
- Stand up a secure, centralized contractor portal for tasking, payments, and onboarding.
- Identify bottlenecks in the data lifecycle and lead tooling/process fixes to eliminate them.
Success in this role means the data engine runs efficiently, at scale, and with uncompromising quality.
