Role Overview
As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer, you will play a crucial role in shaping the technical direction and architecture of the ML platform and infrastructure. You will work closely with other engineering leads and collaborators in academia and industry. The role involves driving technical excellence across all ML engineering teams to deliver high-quality, scalable solutions that transform complex biomedical data into actionable insights for cancer research and diagnostics. Reporting is directly to the Head of ML Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Steer: Define and drive the technical architecture and system design principles for the AI platform and infrastructure. Collaborate closely with engineering leads to build flexible frameworks for model training, evaluation, and inference across pathology applications.
- Consult: Provide expert consultation to the CTO office, product management, and engineering leads on feasibility, architecture, trade-offs, and risk mitigation to align with the technical vision.
- Coordinate: Foster alignment across teams by establishing shared architectural principles and best practices, facilitating cross-team design reviews for consistent decision-making.
- Lead: Champion technical excellence by leading initiatives to modernize architecture and reduce technical debt while improving technical health metrics.
- Educate: Elevate engineering staff capabilities through mentoring, workshops, and technical guidelines to enhance design decisions.
- Advocate: Drive innovation by evaluating emerging technologies, leading proof-of-concept initiatives, and supporting strategic technical investments.
Qualifications and Skills
- Advanced degree in a relevant field or extensive work experience.
- 8+ years industry experience, including at least 2 years as a Staff Engineer or equivalent.
- Proven track record of driving technical excellence and innovation.
- Strong background in data-intensive systems, software architecture, design patterns, and clean coding. Expert in Python and fluent in C/C++ or similar low-level languages. Experience designing and deploying large-scale, distributed ML systems.
- Strong knowledge of machine learning fundamentals and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow. Experience with state-of-the-art techniques including generative models.
- Deep understanding of cloud technologies (GCP, AWS), containerization, orchestration (Kubernetes), workflow orchestration tools (Prefect, Kubeflow, Airflow), and distributed computing frameworks (Ray, Spark).
- Familiarity with MLOps practices, model lifecycle management, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and tools such as Git and WandB. Experience deploying ML models in production with performance monitoring.
- Excellent communication skills to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
- Self-driven learner keeping up-to-date with AI/ML advancements and exploring new technologies.
Additional Desired Experience
- Experience with large-scale data storage, management, and event-driven systems.
- Contributions to open-source projects and technical publications.
- Experience in regulated environments (financial services, aerospace, healthcare).
- Knowledge of digital pathology or biomedical data experience.
